Who we are and what we do

Chirk Town Council consists of 15 elected councillors who serve for a five year term and receive a small allowance, should they choose to claim it.

Chirk Town Council also employs 6 members of staff on a part-time basis.

Council Meetings are normally held on the last Wednesday of each month, except August. - see the diary of meetings for more information and actual dates.

The Council is a corporate body with a legal existence of its own. Its decisions are the responsibility of the whole body, quite separate from that of its individual members.

Chirk Town Council is the first tier of local government and closest to the people.

The Council has a number of basic responsibilities:

• representing the whole electorate within the community;
• delivering services to meet local needs;
• and striving to improve quality of life in the community.

Chirk Town Council's powers and duties cover many things that enhance the town including the maintenance of the town's seven recreational parks and playgrounds, the war memorial, the Parish Hall, CCTV, the Community Agent, Chirk cemetery, Christmas lights, noticeboards, website, trees, biodiversity, speed reduction measures, and the community food cupboard. We also organise local events and support many local community organisations through grants and the provision of premises for local residents and voluntary groups at a concessionary rate.

The Council's role is to represent the interests of the whole community – and to represent the interests of different parts of the community equally. Occasionally there will be a conflict of interest requiring sensitive judgement; for example, dog owners, parents of young children and walkers might disagree about use of the recreational ground. Making difficult decisions, in an open and reasoned way, is a key role of the Council.

Councillors are elected or co-opted.

Councillors are over 18 years old and a British national, or a qualifying citizen from any other country. They are not a paid employee of the Council.

Their role is to bring local issues to the attention of the Council, and help it make decisions on behalf of the local community.
